Why Trendy Brand Name Diets Will Never Be a Longterm Solution to Living a Sustainable Healthier Lifestyle
Look, I get it. It's easy to get caught up in the excitement of the "latest diet trend" that comes along and hope, this is the one, and it will be the answer to all your weight-loss goals. While trying a new diet, you may experience weight-loss at first, but is it sustainable?
The latest trend in dieting, Keto, depends on fatty acids being released from body fat to form ketones in the liver. Ketones are in fact a major energy source when a body is experiencing starvation, but it offers as little as100 grams of carbohydrates per day. Your body naturally prefers to burn carbohydrates before fat because carbohydrates are easier to process to access “glucose”.
The Keto diet works based on consuming only 5% carbohydrates, 75% fat and 20% protein. Over a longer period some of the protein in the body is converted into glucose and those on the Keto diet don't get enough protein and can lose muscle.
Remember the Mediterranean Diet, The Blood Type Diet, ever hear of Dukan? These are the fad diets that spring into popularity, and fade away somewhere in obscurity or are dismantled by scientific studies and tossed into the “failed diet dumpster” as the new brand name diet emerges and rises in popularity.
While I wholeheartedly agree with the 80/20 principal, I also believe the key to success is educating yourself to eat correctly with proper nutrition and establish a consistent fitness routine. When you combine eating right, having a daily workout or routine for physical activity and a proper support system in place—you create healthy and sustainable lifestyle habits.
The hard truth is that there is no such thing as a quick fix or shortcut if you want live a healthier lifestyle. While a byproduct of healthy living can result in weight-loss and a fitter physique––losing weight for the sole purpose of “losing weight” isn’t at all what healthy living is about.
