10 Ways to Bust Excuses, Turn Them Into Actions, Make It a Thing of the Past and Live a Healthier Lifestyle-Right Now

I want you to ask you something.

Are you happy with yourself?

Now before you jump in and answer, yes…..

Really think about this for a moment…

Right NOW, are you happy with everything about YOU?

I’m not talking about “ifs” and “whens.”

Here’s an example of a when statement: “I’ll be happy when I lose 10 pounds”.

An example of an if statement: “I’ll be happy if I can find the time.”


Statements like these keep you from living your dreams. Nothing will change or manifest unless you take action.

When you choose to take responsibility for the areas in your life that aren’t working for you, you’ll notice you have a chance to improve on negative situations. Commitment to your wellness goals is a great priority. After all, if you don’t have your health, what do you have?

Here’s how to bust through excuses and create an actionable plan.

  1. IDENTIFY IT: What excuses do you tell yourself when making a healthy choice is an option? In the past, what situations have kept you from moving forward? Take out a pen and paper and write down the first three that come to mind. Leave space underneath each excuse.

  2. TAKE ACTION: Look at what you wrote down. Underneath each excuse, write an action you can take to change that situation to a positive one. What will move you forward and closer to your goals? This is how you identify limiting beliefs and overcome them.

  3. PREPARE FOR OBSTACLES Sometimes our best plans fall short. That’s, OK. Life happens. Your key to success for overcoming obstacles is preparing for them. Now, this doesn’t mean dwell on all the negative things that could happen, it simply means having a back up plan. For example, if you didn’t have time to do a healthy meal prep for the day, be sure to have healthy snacks with you at all times—a bag of dried fruits or nuts in the car, a protein shake formula in a reusable bag in your purse, etc. Be prepared and you’ll stay on the healthy lifestyle path.

  4. LET GO OF BAD HABITS:  Are you willing to let go of the bad habits, negative patterns or situations that don’t hold your best interest? Well, there’s only one way to move forward and that’s to give up situations that no longer serve your new goals. If your house and refrigerator is full of food you know isn’t good for you and have a habit of eating them if you had a bad day, consider removing them. The sooner the better. To move on, you’ve to recognize those bad habits that keep you locked in negative patterns.

  5. COMMUNITY and SUPPORT: Take a good look at who’s around you. Are they supportive or putting you down? What’s important for lifestyle change is to notice your social circle. Get a coach if you want guidance, mentorship and accountability. Find a support group with people who have the same goals as you do. Keeping bad company will more times than not, keep you exactly where you are. Your job is to determine if it’s worth it to keep certain friendships or if it’s time to move on because you want more for yourself. And guess what? That’s OK.

  6. BE IN THE MOMENT: When you are consistently doing what you committed to, guess what? You are actually in the moment and LIVING the way you aspire to. We only have NOW. There is no someday or future to get to. Be aware of your choices in the very moment you are making them. This is the key to building new healthy habits and positive patterns. When you make good choices that line up with your goals, YOU ARE ALREADY ON THE PATH. Just keep walking.

  7. HONOR YOURSELF: Do you keep your word to yourself? Integrity is everything. When you think of life you want to be living—consider how many times you didn’t honor your commitments to yourself and fell short of reaching your goals because of it. Sometimes you have to say no to that evening out because you said you’d workout and do your weekly meal prep. It’s honoring your word to yourself that keeps you successful and living the life you deserve.

  8. SELF-CARE: Another overlooked detail is time for yourself. We all need time to decompress from the day and relax. It’s different for everyone. Some people like to meditate or do yoga. Other people like to sit outside and gaze at the sky. Maybe it’s a hot bath, a walk around the park or a good book. Whatever you choose for relaxation, self-care is very important for your emotional wellbeing and it’s vital that you take time for yourself everyday.

  9. EVALUATE: A great way to see how far you’ve come with your goals is by keeping a journal. Writing down your daily activities is a powerful way to track your health and wellness progress. You might even be surprised to see what’s possible and how you can add even more positive changes to improve your life.

  10. ATTITUDE OF GRATITUDE: Whatever you believe, being grateful for all the blessings you have in life is important. We are all on this journey and even though you have goals, be grateful for the chance to change them. There is a lot of power in gratitude and having a sense of grace about your life and choices.
